American
Muscle Cars
The muscle cars of the 60s and 70s made high powered cars affordable
for the driver who wanted a little excitement on the drive to work and
on those short little cruises down the 1/4 mile at the local dragstrip.
What is a Muscle Car?
Taking the motor from a big car and stuffing it into a
smaller car wasn't a new idea when the folks at Pontiac did it in 1964,
but it's hard to imagine doing it at a better time.
The result was the Pontiac GTO, a Tempest with a Bonneville
engine that went on to be commonly refered to as the first "Muscle
Car" by a whole lot of people.
Whoever was "first", the race was on. AMC, Buick,
Dodge, Ford, Plymouth, Mercury, Pontiac and Oldsmobile all had their
versions.
But the muscle car era was short lived. By the late 60s
environmental concerns began overriding automotive dreams and by 1973
the muscle car was mostly history.
