Mid America Motorworks
VW Funfest 2008
May 31 - June 1, 2008

Bruce Meyers, the inventor of the Meyers Manx fiberglass dune buggy,
was the guest of honor at Mid America Motorworks 2008 Funfest for air
cooled VWs in Effingham Illinois on May 31 and June 1, 2008.
Listening to Meyers tell the story of the Manx was a great way to spend
part of the day. As can be seen in the photos there was a large variety
of dune buggies and other fiberglass bodied Volkswagens on hand for
the event.
One of the first Meyers Manx dune buggies built, Monocoque Manx #7,
was at the show. Those first Manx dune buggies were called Monocoque
because of the way they were constructed.
There were hundreds of other Volkswagens at the show as well.
This 1974 VW Ghia coupe was one of the air cooled vintage Volkswagens
that turned out for the Mid America Motorworks Funfest 2008. I got to
select a car for the winners circle, and I chose this 74 Ghia from Kentucky.
There were cars from all over the USA at this event. I've been told
that 260 of them joined the tour through the countryside on Saturday
evening.
One of the cars that got a lot of attention wass the 72 Bug that is
being converted to plug-in electric power. This car is a project at
Lake Land College.
Funfest is an annual event put on by Mike Yeager and the team at Mid
America Motorworks. Funfest is held on the company campus in Effingham,
IL. Mid America Motorworks supplies parts for Corvettes and air cooled
Volkswagens.
